Dave's biography continued...
I got my chance to turn pro when a local PGA Professional offered me a job and the opportunity to do my PGA training with him. I was 19 years old and had completed my education and already had a full time job.
The next 4 years were spent learning my trade and developing my game to the PGA standard. I worked at several different golf clubs in England, Wales and Scotland and had a great time playing some of the UK's best courses. I played as much competitive golf as I possibly could and won several Pro Ams. I managed to get to the final qualifying stages for the Open Championship when it was held at St Andrews in 1990.
I became the club professional at a club in Gloucestershire and concentrated on looking after the members and running the pro shop as well as playing and teaching. During this time, I found that my real coaching passion lay firmly with the coaching of junior golfers. I was the junior organiser at the club for 13 years and the section had loads of success as individuals and as a team. During my time as a PGA professional I have had a total of 14 students turn professional and have coached thousands of youngsters and helped them achieve their golfing goals.
In 1998, I made a decision to create and write a structured curriculum for golf because I had so many pupils who were all at different stages of learning and it was difficult to hold group lessons that appealed to everyone. The other main factor that inspired me to write the programme was the fact that there is so much to learn when you start golf. It's not just the hitting of the ball, it's the etiquette and the rules and all the golfy general knowledge.
This programme became the Young Masters Golf programme (www.ymg-golf.com) and with the help of some friends and colleagues we managed to make it the largest structured golf coaching programme in the UK. It was adopted by Golf in Dubai to become their National Junior Training Programme as well as in Kuwait. It has now gone on to run in South Africa and has received recognition from the PGA's of Europe.
I am now working on a new fantastic series of programmes which will enable anyone to start playing and learning golf anywhere. Using the best first-touch equipment, special training tools and a coaching facility that can be built on the space of a tennis court. This is all incredibly exciting and with golf now recognised as an Olympic sport for the 2016 Rio games, everythings set for some very busy times ahead.
