What are the Thornbury Tigers?

The Thornbury Tigers is the name given to the latest young recruits to the game of golf who come along to the group lessons run by myself.

The idea behind the Thornbury Tigers (TT's) is to give all new young golfers the opportunity to take part in a structured programme that covers all facets of the game of golf. It's different to many junior lessons where you roll up, hit balls and that's that.

In the TT's, you can look forward to buiding a solid golf swing as well as picking up many of the rules of the game and tips on etiquette to help you along. You will have great fun in a group of other students who are of a similar standard to yourslef.

The courses run during school term time, which means they run in  approximately 6 weeks segments. During the 6 weeks you will cover swing techniques using all the different clubs in your bag, you will work on the long game and the short game and there will be a major focus on putting.

I believe in getting pupils out on the course as soon as they have the confidence in their swing and they are hitting the ball fairly consistently. This is the key, if a person can address the ball and hit it more often than they miss it, they can get out and start playing. Thornbury Golf Centre is an excellent facility because it has the short Par 3 course and we use this as often as we can.

Once a pupil has experienced playing golf on a course, everything makes much more sense. The importance of direction and accuracy is clearly understood, all the time spent practising chipping and putting starts to pay off and our knowledge of rules and etiquette comes into play.

We play 9 holes on the Par 3 course every fortnight, this is where the TT's come together and go out to play. I am collecting scorecards and will be able to work out TT Handicaps in due course. The longer term aim will be to get all the young Tigers to be able to score their games an play in fun competitions.

During the school breaks I hold Coach and Play days where pupils can have a days golfing fun. Firstly, we go and warm up on the range and then practice and work on our swings. Then it's off to the course we go and we play the front 9 holes before coming in for a well earned lunch. Once we're fully refreshed we head out and finish off the back 9 holes before totting up our scores. These days are great fun and a great way of improving your game and gaining more valuable experience. They run from 10.00 in the morning until 4.00 in the afternoon.
