You can be as good as you want to be - How good do you want to be?

Tuition

Getting the right tuition is vital and finding the right coach is essential. Teaching the younger golfer is not the same as teaching an adult and my whole coaching philosophy reflects this.

DWG Coaching Philosophy

I believe that all young people have the potential to become great golfers if they want to. That's the key, the junior has to want to, it's no good the parent wanting it for them, I have seen this scenario played out in golf, football, cricket, swimming and almost every other sport I've watched.

When a youngster comes for their first golf lesson I am accutely aware that it can be quite a daunting experience, the first objective is to create a relaxed atmosphere and try and build a rapport with the pupil.

Group lessons are probably the best way to get your youngster started, they can work out cheaper and are less intense and more fun. Almost all other sports activies are learned as a group and this suits golf because there's less pressure on the individual.

Pupils learn and progress at different speeds, some could be classed as 'naturals', they tend to be good at most sports and can stand and hit ball after ball with consistency and timing. It is very easy to get carried away with thinking that you've stumbled upon another 'Tiger', every year the media pick up a story like this, where a 4 or 5 year old appears to be exceptionally gifted at golf.

I have coached thousands of youngsters and seen many thousands more playing the game. I have witnessed 5 year olds playing 9 holes on a Par 3 course, in 3 under par gross. I have met 12 year old scratch players and young golfers who absolutely thrive on competition and challenge. I am convinced that many of these players will make careers playing the game at the highest level.

It's all about creating the right environment for the pupil to grow and flourish. Most youngsters don't really want to have a golf lesson where they stand and hit golf balls for an hour, they want and need fun and variety.
